By definition, a ‘well set’ goal is really another term for a project. But, just have a think about these two words and what they mean to you. First off, think about the word goal. Most people see goals as something personal, and something that isn’t really a ‘must’ to achieve – rather, it is something that they want to achieve.
Now think about the word project. I’m willing to bet you come up with a different mental picture in your head. Most people see a project as something that must be completed and needs to be achieved within a certain timeframe.
The difference in the understanding of these two words can explain why so many goals are set but never achieved. They aren’t thought of as ‘musts’. People set goals for good reasons. But, it is a common trait in human nature for people to not do anything until they have to… until whatever it is becomes a must, even when it is something they really want. Turn your goals into projects, and you have a small mindshift. You may see your goals in a different light.
Take a look at the Goals worksheet on the downloads page of this site. This is basically a small project plan. Download the plan, and write your goals out like a small project plan.
Make sure you fill out each part of the plan as each section has a specific purpose. Ensure you include a date by which you want to have achieved the goal in the first section of the sheet. Now get to work on your new project! Good luck!
