Tony Robbins came up with this quote when he was asked by a General of the United States Army “Why do a lot of my soldiers live their lives at an extremely high standard in the army, only for a lot of them to drop their standards significantly when they leave?” Tony’s answer was that their peer group within the marines expected high standards, and when they left the marines, they were in many cases returning home to people whose standards and expectations were not as high as what they had been used to.
Peer groups are the people who we associate with on a regular basis in the various parts of our lives. We might have peer groups at work, peer groups in business, peer groups in sport and social peer groups.
When we have people who hold us to a higher standard on a regular basis, we tend to strive to match the standard of those peers. Conversely, when we consistently interact with people whose standards are not as high, or who don’t want to see someone succeed, we tend to bring ourselves down to their level somewhat. Indeed, with the latter it is often a case that when someone tries to lift their standards higher than their peer group, that their peers will try to ‘bring them back down’ to their level. They do this, not because they don’t love you but because they do love you… they don’t want to lose you.
So, if you are someone that wants to achieve more in some part of your life, but your peer group does not share that passion or enthusiasm to lift your standard, what do you do? No, you don’t have to get rid of these people as often they are our friends or family, but what you can do is find new peers to help you uphold a higher standard for the areas of your life that you want to improve.
For example, say you are a little overweight and your peer group are similarly overweight. You want to lose a few kilos and get fit but your peer group are happy the way that they are. Are you more likely to hold yourself to a higher standard and maintain your weight loss program by finding a peer group such as an exercise group who have the same motivations as you do, or by trying to do it by yourself or with your current peer group?
