A while ago I brought you a story about Geese and how smart they are. Well, today I read something about Giraffes that I thought I would share with you.
You see, as it turns out, Giraffes are also smart animals. This intelligence comes out of necessity (to not get eaten), but nevertheless, they provide a great lesson that can be applied to us human beings!
When a baby giraffe is born, the birth is completed with the Mother standing up. The baby has a good 2 metre drop down to the ground when it arrives. Welcome to the World!! When it hits the deck, it is usually fairly fragile and a bit shaken (as you would be). Mum gives it a nudge with her nose, a bit of a lick to clean it up, and then gives it a kick!
Baby goes flying through the air, and ends up in a heap on the ground again. Mum checks that it's alright, and gives it another kick.... she repeats this display of affection until baby giraffe stands on its own feet. Nice huh? Of course, baby giraffe's make good lion food, so it is out of necessity that the baby must learn to get to its feet as soon as possible.
The lesson out of this story for us, is that when you fall, it always helps to have someone to give you a kick to get back up again. I don't mean a back kick... a kick in the guts.. I mean a loving kick or nudge, to help you find your feet again. Someone to hold you to account. Someone to help you get back on track. Too many of us fail because we don't push ourselves out of our comfort zones, and when we do fall, we stay down, to scared to get back up and give it another go. If you stay down, you may not get eaten, but your dreams and ambitions most certainly will.
Can you find someone to be that person to hold you to account and give you that nudge? Can you be someone who can give a loving nudge to someone else?
