I love the raw passion that State of Origin generates in people. There is not too many times of the year when so many people unite around the tele, cheering for their team, hurling abuse at the tv, screaming at the ref, jumping for joy when their team scores. What I really love to watch is how the game draws out such passion and courage out of the players. For 80 minutes, these guys throw themselves at each other with such ferocity and such intensity that it is hard to comprehend the pain that they must go through. They push through pain barriers that they have probably never known before, they spur each other on, they push each other, they fight for each other….they never give up until the final siren has gone and the fat lady has sung.
Who can forget the Queensland team that won the third game of the 1989 series, when they played on with 5 men out injured and finished the match a man down only to go on and win the game and the series. Bob Lindner played 20 minutes of the game with a broken leg because they did not have any reserves left and he did not want to let his team down. What about Nathan Hindmarsh for New South Wales, throwing up on the field from having pushed himself so hard and making something like 50 tackles before half-time. Mick Devere having a gaping headwound stapled shut on the sideline because he didn’t want to give it in.
The point here (aside from the fact that Qld rules) is that if you want something bad enough, you will push yourself through just about anything to get it. When you hear about these stories of courage, grit and determination, it kinda makes those decisions like deciding to stay in bed instead of getting up to go for that walk, or watching tv and procrastinating instead of just doing what has to be done seem a little weak, don’t they? Embrace even a bit of that passion, enthusiasm and hunger to succeed and turn it into action, and it will be almost impossible for you to fail.
QUEENSLANDER!! GO THE MIGHTY MAROONS!
Have an awesome week guys, and may the best team win (the series)!
PS - I won't really hate you NSW Blues.. really that much
