Welcome to the New Year!

Hi guys,

Well we are now at the end of yet another year. How was it for you? Did you achieve all of the things you thought you might do at the end of last year? New Year’s Resolutions are something that people have been practicing for many years. It is the chance to look ahead with a brand new year in front of you... a blank canvas to start again and make the year ahead a year to do more things you want to do. It is a chance to put the lows (if there were any) of the year just gone behind you. But, the thing with New Year’s Resolutions is that in many cases, the resolution has vanished within the first couple of weeks into the New Year. Why does this happen? I believe that one of the main reasons that this occurs is that within the first few weeks of the New Year we climb straight back onto the same old merry-go-round that we have been riding in the past. Over the course of the holiday period, we tend to take the time to relax, to think about the things we want to do, reflect on the past year and the things we want to do differently. We celebrate the New Year and make our New Year’s Resolution…. and then we go back to work, the kids go back to school, and before you know it, we are doing the same thing that we did at the end of last year. Where does the energy and the passion for our resolutions for the New Year go? How does it disappear so quickly? All of a sudden, we don’t have time to think about them anymore. All of a sudden, our days are completely filled up and we don’t seem to have the time or energy to focus on our dreams and goals anymore, and we slip back to the same old same ol’. So… what is the answer?

First off, let’s look at time. Why are we so busy compared to what we used to be? Why is it that the first answer that comes out of most people’s mouths when they are asked the question ‘how are you?’ is ‘I’m flat out’. Are we really that much busier with important stuff than we used to be? In most cases the answer is no. If you look at the superfluous time wasters that we have nowadays compared to say 10 years ago, you can easily see where the time goes and more than likely find an extra hour or two in your day. How many minutes do we waste surfing the internet for no other reason than to catch up on unimportant stuff? How many minutes do we waste flicking through the channels trying to decide what to watch on foxtel? How many minutes are wasted going through your emails? Messenger? Facebook?? We have created a life where we have filled our spare time with unimportant shit that just doesn’t matter and our goals and dreams suffer for it. Spend even half the time that you normally do on these and other unimportant things and I guarantee you will find yourselves an extra couple of hours a week.

Next, let’s look at focus. It is so easy to get distracted with all of these other things happening in our lives that we lose focus on our goals and they disappear off the radar. Try this - make the effort to get out of bed 30 minutes earlier than you normally do and go for a walk. Focus purely on your goals while you are walking and why you want to achieve them. There are a couple of benefits from this little exercise - you keep the goals at the forefront of your mind and it helps your health and fitness. It is a great way to start the day. Where focus goes, energy flows.

Lastly, we need to force the changes that we want in our lives. We need to give energy to them. If nothing changes, then nothing changes. Change comes from within you. Change comes from taking action. Until you allow yourself to give a bit of energy to your goals, to push yourself that little bit more, to challenge your comfort zones a little, then nothing changes. If you really want something, go for it. Don’t give yourself excuses, don’t wait another day, don’t wait until the end of 2010 to make the same promises to yourself. Make this year the year the best of your life to date…. Commit yourself and do it. Resolutions are only words… Results come from ACTION.

All the best for the New Year!
Cheers,
Brett

Thanks for that Brett ... I wasn't making any resolutions because I never go through with them. You have inspired me to give it another go!

I'll let you know when I have achieved my first success.

My New Years resolution is not to eat takeaway and lose 5kgs - I just had takeaway for dinner!!! Lasted one night. bugger. But I am starting again from now!!!! My other one is to organise my life better so I have more time for everything that is important to me. My other one is to cut down on drinking. New Years Eve nearly killed me. Plus I think it will work towards me losing the 5kg in my first resolution. Here is to a successful year!!!! Thanks for your support.

My resolutions are to get fitter, be the best husband and dad that I can be, and to live 2010 to my utmost potential with fun and passion. Oh, and I also am going to cut down on my drinking too..(after this weekend)..
Thanks for supporting me..

Very wise words Bretty, what you said is true, it's a matter of putting in to practice. I think I should do it, but I am in my comfort zone, so time to get out of it!
