I was sitting at home on the couch today, comfortably watching the sports update on fox, when suddenly a rude interruption entered my mind. All of a sudden a thought emerged about all of the things I have got to do around the house. Top of the list was a tap to change, a shower nozzle to replace, and the attic to clean out. Instantly there was that feeling of dread and guilt that you get when you know you should be doing something other than what you are currently doing. I was about as unmotivated as you can get, with a dull headache from the beers and wine that my wife and I consumed with dinner on our date night the night before. As much as I tried to ignore the voice in my head, it wouldn’t go.
So, I had a choice. Stay on the couch with the foxtel and deal with the nagging voice at a later stage, or get off my a@#$ and get stuck into it. I really didn’t feel like doing it, but I couldn’t defeat the voice so I got up and just made a start. I switched to auto pilot and didn’t think of why I didn’t want to be doing it. All I would have been doing is lying around anyway so I just started.
Before I knew it I had replaced the kitchen tap, so I moved on to the bathroom shower. With a bit of mucking around, it was done too. I was on a roll by now so I thought I would take a look at some of the other jobs I have been adding to the list. I didn’t tackle the attic as it was the middle of the day by now and too hot, so I did some measuring up of some skirting boards I want to replace. Got the measurements and was off to Bunnings… that’s about where the story stops because Bunnings is a pain on Saturdays!!
Anyway, the point of this little story is that you don’t have to feel motivated to take action!! Stop thinking about the reasons why you don’t want to do something and just start doing it and you will find that you will get on a roll. Movement creates momentum. Just start… put the music on and turn it up! Block out the voice telling you that you don’t want to do it – start to move and get in the zone and just keep moving!
Have an awesome week guys!
